Let the Bishop eat cake

The Catholic diocese of Sacramento is going to pay $35 million dollars to 33 victims of clergy sexual abuse.

Well, they can pay them without my help. If they have to sell everything it owns, I don't really care.

This comes on the heels of a multi-million dollar restoration effort of the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament (this is Sacramento, after all).

Hmm, now that the cathedral is all spruced up and refurbished, why not sell that?

I have to say, though, as much as the cathedral is touted as something lovely and grand -- it's not.

It isn't a dump, but it isn't special in any way either. The ornaments and materials are quite ordinary, the decoration is boilerplate rococo minus fine materials, the stained glass windows are boring, and it merely rises to the level of a nice parish church. (St. Francis in our midtown is as good as the cathedral and on the same level of quality.) It is pleasant to be in, but not inspiring nor elevating.

The best looking church in Sacramento is Sacred Heart done in a very Italianate style with quite good materials, proportions, and colors. Most of our other churches are just barns.
