Praying for the Pope's Death

William F. Buckley is not praying for the Pope to continue living.

Neither am I. Our reasons differ only a little.

When asked during Sunday Mass to pray for the Pope's health and recovery, neither Bill nor I do so.

It is not out of any animosity. I wish him well in eternity, but felt he should have resigned once his job became too difficult to do because of poor health, and two, he is an old man and I would wish him a good, peaceful death rather than a prolonged misery.

There's nothing wrong with him dying now. He is not indispensible. He has served long and well (for the most part) and deserves his reward in Heaven.

What I say to John Paul II is Godspeed.
