Lost in Space?

One of the problems with having a President who is fairly ignorant about cutting edge science is that he must rely entirely on advisors who have their own ignorance and prejudices.

It has been pointed out that without cheap heavy lift capability, we're not going anywhere soon. This article via Jonah at The Corner outlines a great possibility, but not a word did the president mention of the necessity of such a thing as The Space Elevator.

I'm all for spending money on science and exploration (even a nation needs a good hobby), but unless it's going to be spent wisely, there's no point.
