New York Times Fading Out?

I won't miss the Times if it dies, but I wonder why they are cutting newsroom reporters' jobs. Even online providers of comment depend on content provided by reporters at the scene.

If the strength of a newspaper is its coverage of a wide variety of subjects or parts of the world, wouldn't that be the part you'd hang on to?

One blogger I read talked about how newspapers and TV stations may well have to simply contract out to provide content.

He envisioned independant reporters who contract to provide court house or city hall reports. Such people would provide their own photographs or video reports, too.

Sounds like a plan to me.
