Mr. Pearcy (scroll down for that story) reminds me of that quote. Dalrymple was speaking of criminals, but he would also apply it to the kind of thinking that goes on in the heads of Marxists and lefty loonies. They are very stupid people in most respects but they are not without their cunning and intensity of venality rather like hyenas.
