My wife doesn't understand me

Is a classic formulation by countless numbers of men throughout history. And for good reason. They are right. They are misunderstood, but even more, they don't understand their wives.

Very few people understand each other.

My mother spent inordinate amounts of time trying to figure out my father, what made him tick, why was he as he was, what was his psychology?

But what my mother never realized was that she would never truly understand another person until she understood herself. And she didn't know why she was the way she was.

The only way to understand life, yourself, and God is by knowing yourself. If you try to do this with serious devotion, you will be called self-absorbed, a navel gazer, selfish minded, an egotist, a narcissist, paralyzed by reflection, and a Hamlet (sickly o'ered with the pale cast of thought).

If you persevere despite the slings and arrows, you will become a mensch who understands everyone else, but whom very few understand.
